Broke my heart - although I was just a little bit disappointed that the you-know-what between you-know-who wasn't actually written about but happened "off-stage". I was on tenterhooks all through the book just waiting for the 'big reveal' (don't want to spoil the ending for those who've not yet read this tender story) and was all ready to sob my heart out when it was imminent ... but it was a bit of a non-event. I swear Rumer Godden must've been a toy herself - if not a doll then definitely a toy elephant - she voices their emotions and feelings and desires so eloquently. "I want to be squeezed" - heck, I cried for 10 minutes after reading that little sentence right at the beginning of the book. And I'm 63 ...The illustrations are absolutely exquisite too. A true joy of a book. Now I need to go and buy a little toy elephant and a doll. For myself.

The Story of Holly and Ivy Rumer Godden Barbara Cooney 9780670062195 Books Reviews
Absolutely beautiful book. I enjoyed reading this story to my 8 year old daughter during the Christmas season. We packed it away with the ornaments, and I'm looking forward to reading it again to her next year!
I bought this for our grandchildren. Our kids had it when they were young and always had me read it at Christmas-time. I don't think they thought so much of the story as they did of the fact that I broke out in tears as a little doll's hopes and a little girl's dreams met. I'm sure I won't dissappoint the kids and grandkids this Christmas. I can already feel the tears forming. (
I gave this book as a birthday/early Christmas gift to the daughter of a friend. It is a wonderful, heart-warming story with beautiful illustrations. I still have my own children's copy as the story is/was very special to them. I certainly would recommend this book for a fall birthday or an early Christmas gift.
This is SUCH a wonderful Christmas story, and made a great gift for my 6 year old daughter. Often, with long stories, I will break them up and read them to my daughter over multiple nights. I read the whole thing right through in one sitting, and neither of us wanted to put it down. It's truly a great story (if a little far fetched), and we both enjoyed it immensely. Can't wait to make reading this story a yearly tradition, and to pass it on to another generation.
The Story of Holly and Ivy by Rumer Godden… tear-jerker! That is all I will say, since I do not want to spoil the story for you. Our family has read many, many Christmas books. Many will never be read again, but Holly and Ivy has made it to our yearly tradition list.
I wish I hadn't waited to buy this book for our Christmas collection. It's a lovely story with classic themes, not too heavy-handed and not sappy. My children enjoyed it, although my son (8) was initially skeptical. It's an optimistic portrait of a determined and brave little girl who maintains a sense of her own worth despite her circumstances and goes in search of the life she envisions. The book is great for children 4-5 and up, probably perfect for kids 7-8 (my 12 year-old daughter, although an advanced reader at this point and quite mature, still liked it, especially the darling illustrations).
Enter into the world of Holly and Ivy. A girl and a doll living in two different worlds both wanting the same thing...to be loved. Their wishes transcend the pages flowing back and forth setting the stage for their imminent meeting. But with the store closed and no money, how can their wishes ever come true?
This story is told with true mastery of character development at a level that children can follow. My daughters ages 10 and 7 were truly captivated to the point that we sat and read the book in its entirety even though this allows them way past their bedtime! (Perhaps that was part of the magic) This is quite possibly the best Christmas book we have placed on our shelf. I'm so glad I added it and you will be too!
