By now much of the computing concepts are antique but the premise still holds true. I loved this book when it came out and enjoying thinking "y'know? what if...". Fortymumble(?) years later I wonder if Mr Ryan might have been a bit prescient (Alexa, are you reading this?). I recently got a copy of the book as I remembered enjoying the flow of the story when it was first published and enjoyed it as much these years later.

Ignore the dated batch processing terminology and the fact that our pocket phones are far more capable than the "monster sized" machines in the story. The premise that a virus could get loose and "wake up" becomes more real every moment.

What an enjoyable book, this book was written before sci-fi cyber-books were really popular. While the reader does not have to be a computer expert, the story does center around computers and artificial intelligence, and may not appeal to the non-technical. All in all an interesting concept as a bases for the story line.
An old book from my childhood, lost during a house move. Glad to have another copy. The story is very much centred in the computer world of the late 70s, so a certain understanding of the state of the art of the time is necessary, but by all means not required. Still ranks up there with "The Forbin Project" (a.k.a. "Colossus") as good "break-through AI" storylines

I first read this story in the '70s, after I'd joined the Air Force and become a computer programmer. Upon re-reading it, I still find the story both fascinating and prophetic. The story foretells a world in which all computers are interconnected (except for a secret military network) and where the computers, through a bit of miraculous programming, have accidentally evolved into a being called "P-1". This sentient distributed computer program fixes bugs in software and uses the network to grow and improve. Unlike "The Forbin Project" or "Terminator", the computer is a force for good - most of the time.

This is an engaging story that is more pertinent now, with the advent of powerful desktop computers and the Internet, that will get the reader thinking about not only what is, but what could be.
Just got this book in today and finished it while on a long night shift. Book came in aged but very acceptable for something printed in 1979. A very technical read, but filled with emotions and suspense. Would fully recommend this book to anybody who enjoys a realistic "Frankenstein " sci-fi novel
An amazingly prescient book written in the 1970's. Well written, not excellent literature per se, but a story you will want to read to the end. Mark Zuckerberg should read it.
The plot seems even more intriguing with recent head lines and the world wide web. I can easily see the military trying to capture and control a great independent "being" resident in the web as we would think of it today. I loved this novel when it first came out and lend it out to so many people, it didn't come back. So recently I found a very acceptable used copy and ordered it. Stayed up to midnight rereading it for the first time in decades and it is still as thrilling and well written for a first novel.
