This really was a complete snooze fest. Firstly its incorrectly titled. I'm not sure why they changed the title which had been ST. THOMAS'S EVE when originally published in 1954. I guess they thought The King's Confidante sounded better. But it's absolutely incorrect. If I recall the King and Meg the favorite daughter of More meet once maybe twice in the book? And King Henry the 8th doesn't feature largely in this book at all.
The book is entirely about Sir Thomas More, his wife, his children and their spouses.
It's slow moving and not very interesting.
It literally put me to sleep many times over.

Great historical novel. I got a real feel for the characters.
I learned several details about Sir Thomas More that I didn't know before. In today's world he'd be classified as either a saint or an eccentric genius, and probably both! I found this book to be more about Sir Thomas than about his daughter Meg (Margaret), but who cares? Tudor history is so full of politics, characters and personalities that it's almost impossible to write about one person without including 10 or 12 others. For those who'd like to know just a little more about Sir Thomas More, this is a great read.
There was much to like in this portrait of Thomas More, but I just couldn't get past the inaccuracy and dishonesty of the title and cover.
"Confidante" uses a female ending (Like blonde) and the cover picture of a nearly bare woman's bosom definitely led me to believe this would involve a main character who was female. More's wife and daughter were both rendered respectably, but neither of them was the king's most trusted friend. I kept expecting some clever twist.
I immensely enjoy most of Jean Plaidy's work. Her trilogy about Catherine De Medici was fantastic! This was not at all up to par. The story line was dull, the title misleading, and the ridiculous amount of typos were just too much. Every page it seems several times "the" was replaced with "die", the German version. As much as I love Jean Plaidy's other works this one makes me hesitant to buy anymore.
This is the story of the daughter of Sir Thomas More, a scholarly lawyer who rose to fame and fortune as the confidante and advisor to King Henry VIII. Chancellor of England, Sir Thomas More was a devoted family man, and the apple of his eye was his eldest daughter, Margaret, whom he fondly called Meg.

The More family was a happy one, and Meg was devoted to her father. Sir Thomas More, contrary to popular belief at the time, thought that women should be given an education equal to that given men. Consequently, the intelligent and precocious Meg became an erudite scholar. She was everything Sir Thomas More could have hoped for in a daughter.

The focus of the book is not the Court of King Henry but, rather, the home life of the More family and the ways in which they spent their days, shadowed only by the tempest caused by the King's desire to rid himself of his lawful wife in order to marry the notorious Anne Boleyn. This is an interesting departure for the author, whose books often focus on court life. This birds-eye view into a non-royal family in Tudor England is sure to capture the imagination of the author's many fans.
I do not have enough time to write reviews. But as far as Jean Plaidy is concerned, I would take some time to write one. The story is about the scholar Thomas More whose career reached its zenth as chancellor, having the seal around his neck and in his nadir, had the axe hovering over the nape. Jean Plaidy as always brings past character to life, and this excellent read portrays the characters to actual life. Thomas More was constant and unswerving in what he thought what was right. And he was aware, how life can be fickle.For his staunch principles, he forsook all wordly honours, yet he clung to life and wished to live as an ordinary man. Thomas was a good lawyer by far and when brought to trial, he could not be imputed to have done a subvertive action against Henry the eight. However ambitios men wanted his downfall, by accomaditing the King's whims. The courage against the fear of death was stolidy evident in this serious but jesting character as described. The seperation from his daughter Margret Roper is haertbreaking and in my opinion the climax came when this preferred daughter of his, came by the river to take Thomas severed head from the poles in which it was hung.
Most history books tell you what happened. They don't really explain why. Jean Plaidy has a talent for bringing historical figures to life. This book describes the relationship between Henry VIII and Sir Thomas More. She brings us into the king's court and into the home of the More family. We get an understanding of each of these men's values. The king is concerned about an heir to his throne, his legacy, and satisfying his own desires. Thomas More is concerned about pleasing God and doing what is right. At a time when disagreeing with the king meant that you would soon lose your life, being a man of conscience required great tact and great courage. It makes me glad to live in a country where I can freely disagree with the government without being condemned to death for treason. If you are interested in history, but find history books dry and dull, you will enjoy this book.
