Love is Fear Valerie Dearborn Book 2 eBook Caroline Hanson
In this second book of the series, the King of the Fey, Cerdewellyn is introduced. He wants revenge on Lucas for killing his people and to restore what's left of his people back to Earth, along with him is the remnants of werewolves, witches, and Empaths that still survive. Lucas is looking for them for his own reasons and needs Valerie to act as a go between. Meanwhile Valerie is still the whinny, indecisive, immature character she was in the first book. Can't make up her mind who she wants, Lucas or Jack and has sex with both, but has the audacity to get jealous with the thought of Jack being with someone else besides her. She is used by everyone, but doesn't have the strength, intelligence or backbone to stand up for herself and again I really didn't think much of her. This book ends in a cliff hanger so I was interested enough to read the third book.Tags : Love is Fear: Valerie Dearborn Book 2 - Kindle edition by Caroline Hanson. Love is Fear Valerie Dearborn Book 2 eBook Caroline Hanson Reviews
**This is a review of the trilogy as a whole.**
Forget Twilight. This series is one of the best hidden treasures amidst a genre of brooding passive-aggressive vampires. In this densely carnal, twisted take on fey, vampire, and otherworld magic, the heroine Valerie shines beneath the crushing weight of her love for two heroes. Jack, her childhood friend turned vampire hunter, is committed to keeping things platonically frustrating. Lucas, the 1600 year old vampire king, is complicated by his cold abstention of emotion. Each book in this series is infused with a deliberate pace that proves instrumental in establishing and perpetuating what I love most about this story the dark tone and fantastical atmosphere. From book 1 to book 3, it is dreary, heartfelt, vengeful, and imaginative, without any tacked-on erotica or desperate cliches. The world building is masterful, the writing equally so. CH tortures you before handing over Valerie's hard-earned forbidden love, and while the third book concludes with a HEA epilogue, intriguing questions remain. A promise of another book, separate from the trilogy
You know you've truly found a good book, when you can't help but immerse yourself fully, until all reality completely falls away and there's nothing left but the imaginary world between the pages. In reading this book, I almost forgot about my little world and anything lying beyond the book in my hands. Lovely.
A little more Days of Your Lives (Paranormal style) at the beginning, but overall one of the better followups I've read in quite some time. Actually, I thought it was even better than the first. Comparatively, I still noticed a few mistakes, but it's still better polished overall. It also seemed more humorous, sometimes to the point of crudeness, but I took it in stride because it was still quite funny. This book also flowed better, even more engaging (if that's possible), and the story itself left me breathless, which was the true reason why I liked it so much.
Before I get to the plot, I highly suggest anyone who hasn't yet read the first book, to start there. This isn't a standalone, and anyone attempting to read it as such, will be utterly disappointed and confused.
The followup to Love is Darkness starts off exactly where the first book ends, which is sort of a rarity, if you ask me. I especially liked the expanded world building and flashbacks involving the fey.
Word of warning. This one has way more sex than most PNRs even, but I would still be hesitant to classify this solely as a PNR. Contending with the heavy sexual and romantic theme is the heart of this book's story. The Fey are a long died out race, or so everyone thought. The Fey King has waited centuries for his chance at revenge, and he's intending to get it at all cost. The fey subplot is actually pretty interesting and balances out the romantic/vamp subplot quite nicely. That, and it doesn't exactly follow the same old Hero's journey paradigm.
My second caution is to those who despise cliffhangers. I would suggest holding off until the next book gets released, because this one is a doozy.
******
After a lot of swearing and only a little nookie, Valerie Dearborn has decided to make a change. No more lusting after Lucas, the hot, but emotionless, vampire king who can't commit. Instead she's going to make it work with Jack. After all, not only is he breathing, but he's the love of her life....Isn't he?
Valerie is an Empath, with supernatural abilities that seem to do nothing more than give her the hots for Lucas. Once upon a time, Empath's had a purpose. They were ambassadors to the Others--Fey, Witches, Werewolves and Vampires. They could settle the emotions of a Werewolf and make Vampires feel again.
But that was long ago.
Lucas isn't about to let Valerie go. He needs her to help him find the Fey, last seen in the Colony of Roanoke, South Carolina, circa 1587. He still believes they are the key to restoring balance to the world and the only way to keep vampires under control. They won't trust him, but they will trust Val.
Between Jack, Lucas and Rachel, Val knows life won't be dull. Nor will it be the normal, 2.5 kids kind of life she's always wanted.
As their enemies close in, Val must ask herself what life is really about-trust, duty or mind-blowing orgasms? And even if she finds the answer, she may not live long enough to enjoy it.
Ok just finished this one. Caroline, I still haven't figured out the cover for the 1st book , but this cover seems to fit better.
Valerie is still so scattered, she couldn't decide to get out of a wet paper sack. Selfish - see Rachel's comments to Jack about her feelings on Val. They're spot on.
Jack - this boy has got a one track mind! His decision at the end surprised me, but then I guess it shouldn't have. Guess I was still hoping......
Lucas - I like him. I know he's still dark, driven and still King of the Vampires. I winced a bit, covered my eyes during the "Challenge". Now there's a scene for ya.
When ya get about 70% thru think Snow White and a couple of other fairy tales. Keep an eye out for 12 body parts and 12 bolts of lightening. I enjoyed this book more then the 1st, probably cuz I'm deeper into the plot and characters. As soon as my battery get up and running I'll be diving into the last book, can't leave Lucas on the floor goes against the grain. ~P~.
This was a really fun read and would happily recommend to anyone who enjoys paranormal romance. It's fast paced, action packed and all around very well done. Don't hesitate to pick this one up. This is the second time I've read this book, and I definitely like the story and the writing enough to not only have bought the entire series but to take the time to read them a second time through (I read them last time maybe two years ago and am working through them again now. Great plot, lots of original twists and fantastic secondary characters to boot. There's lots to hold your interest here. You won't regret it.
