The story world was excellent. The author’s descriptive language was enough to visualize the setting but she didn’t overdo it as some writers tend to do. I immediately felt sympathy for both Bertie and Ky and liked them for their compassion and bravery. The other characters were awesome in their own way. Even one of the antagonists had a backstory that cased me to feel sympathy for him. I could visualize the area known as the Underground and admired the cunning ability of its members who survived through thievery. Intriguing story with plenty of action and enough surprises to keep me reading.

The main problem I had with this book was the cliffhanger ending. Also one of the point of view characters had a manner of speaking that meant letters were left off of words and it became annoying and even a little confusing to read. But I’m interested enough to read the next book in the series. I want to see how the author ties up some loose ends and the main character finds out what it truly means to be a Songkeeper.

Orphan Song Songkeeper Chronicles Gillian B Adams 9781621840350 Books Reviews

Each generation has one Songkeeper. There are those who wish to help the Songkeeper and those who wish to kill her. Birdie is an orphan, who is made to slave away in an abusive household (like Jane Eyre!). But she can hear the Song that no one else can. Will singing it save her or destroy her?

This isn't in my usual genre, but I really enjoyed it. The writing itself is beautiful and poetic. The metaphors serve double duty by not only giving you a vivid picture, but adding depth to the story world. Altogether, this is a very artfully done allegory.
The only reason I give the story 3 star rating is because there is no let up of
Disaster. A really good book will have plateaus and climaxes. This story only
Contains climaxes with no resting places to catch your breath. So be prepared, not for a
Wild ride but a single mountain.
I'm hoping the second book is better written. I like the characters and they are
Well defined in the midst of chaos. The book just needs a breather, to give hope
And not just never ending dispair.
Plato wrote, “[Music] gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination.” That has to be the theme for Orphan’s Song, a brilliant fantasy by Gillian Bronte Adams. In her masterfully constructed world, music sits at the core of being but only the Songkeeper can tap into it. In this first book of the series the Songkeeper is initially unaware of her gift but is forced into a quest in which she begins to discover the true power of Song. By it’s very nature this story grabs the soul of the reader and allows our minds and imagination to take wing. I look forward to reading the second book.
The beginning was done very well. The author had an exciting prelude that brought you into the book. The part immediately after the beginning was rather boring but she moved on into the story quickly.

The song. It was beautifully done. I felt as though I was there. I heard the beautiful melodious, sometimes melancholy notes. It was written explicitly.

The plot was good and the Khelari were doing their bit in the story. One thing though, I would have liked to be able to know some more about the land the story was set in. I wanted to know more about the surrounding lands and the land they were currently in.

The ending left you in suspense although not so badly you were aching for the next book every moment of your awake life. ) Just suspenseful enough to make the reader ready to read the next book as soon as possible.

Overall, it was a beautiful. I would give it 4.5 stars out of 5. Well done Miss Adams!
Hi five-star rating. This is a lovely and wonderful book with plenty of action, humor and great characters! The action sequences are gritty and believable.
Basically, an orphan girl of 12 or so discovers that she can sing a song that brings deliverance and power from God into a situation. The wonderful thing about this is that I have girls of 10 and 13, and they constantly sing songs! This is a big encouragement to them.
Amos is a wonderful character. You start off thinking of him as a peddler who will love and protect Birdie at all cost. But as the story unfolds, you find out that there’s way more depth to him and to the whole situation.
These 2 are basically running for their lives and take up with Dwarves and the Griffin.
But there’s another major story thread a young boy named Ky is part of an underground situation that reminds me of London with Charles Dickens.
These threads are woven together in a very satisfying way with a bit of sword quest, great chases and drama as the characters struggle to know how to combat an evil Emperor.
The author weaves magic into the story, but the magic is not so prevalent that becomes too surreal. I will be eating up the next installment and reading this to my children!
Gillian has written a fast-paced, intriguing story set in a world that is so well-thought out it is easy to traverse. I found myself not only drawn into the adventure of the main characters, but curious about the history. Where are these lands? What are the people like? I am looking forward to seeing more in the sequel, which is next on my shelf to read.

Favorite parts the talking cat; the dwarves and their souped-up battle wagon; the excellent, well-characterized villain; and action scenes that made me want to reach for a sword of my own. Started reading this book on my lunch break, and kept me turning pages!
